The easy, seven-kilometre loop track winds through a mountain beech forest and alongside a cascading stream before arriving at the creamy-white terraces of Silica Rapids.

This highly varied walk reveals a range of vegetation types including subalpine plants, amid a mixture of swamp and tussock country.

Other highlights on the trail include lava formations, native ferns, waterfalls, golden silica rapids and wonderful views of Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu on a clear day.
