Lake Taupō’s size – roughly the same area as Singapore – and picturesque beaches give the appearance of an inland ocean. Scenic lake cruises and fishing adventures are available for Huka Lodge guests with premium Taupō operators year–round.
Most Taupō lake fishing takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies and complements the peaceful, quiet vibe on the lake’s still waters.
A half-day lake cruise includes an up-close visit with the giant Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori rock carvings. Carved by artist Matahi Brightwell and towering some 14 metres above water level, the carvings are hailed as New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary Māori artworks.
On a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Mounts Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro can be spotted on the horizon at the lake’s southern end.
The cruise includes lunch, wine and beverages and all fishing equipment including licences, while a kayaks and paddle boards are available to rent for an additional cost way to explore the western bays’ inlets.
