Most Taupō lake fishing takes the form of trolling using either lures or flies and complements the peaceful, quiet vibe on the lake’s still waters.
A half-day lake cruise includes an up-close visit with the giant Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori rock carvings. Carved by artist Matahi Brightwell and towering some 14 metres above water level, the carvings are hailed as New Zealand’s most extraordinary contemporary Māori artworks.
On a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Mounts Ruapehu, Ngāuruhoe and Tongariro can be spotted on the horizon at the lake’s southern end.
The cruise includes lunch, wine and beverages and all fishing equipment including licences, while kayaks and paddle boards are available to hire for an additional cost – another way to explore the western bays’ inlets.
